Current Projects
Environmental Control System for Vertical Farming Prototype
Technical areas: ESP32 software development, UI design, IoT, embedded electronics
Development of a prototype environmental control system for an advanced vertical farming setup, incorporating linear belt-driven rails and electronically controlled valves. If successful, the system may be developed into a full product and is intended for testing at one of the UK’s leading plant science research centres. The software will run on an ESP32 platform and will manage automation routines, environmental setpoints, safety overrides, and a touchscreen user interface.
PCB Design for DC Power Monitoring
Technical areas: PCB design, embedded electronics
Design of a compact and reliable PCB to enable DC current monitoring using sensors, for integration with a customer's existing system.
Autonomous Tracked Robot for Fruit Punnet Retrieval
CAD design, mechanism design, ROS, C++, embedded & power electronics
Design of a prototype tracked robot system to collect heavy punnets from fruit picking lanes and transport them to a designated loading area. This project will be developed in collaboration with one of the UK’s largest fruit farms and has and has the potential to significantly reduce manual handling in agricultural workflows.
Custom Rail Cart for Railway Track Friction Measurement Device
CAD design, Arduino / Raspberry Pi, embedded systems, fluid control
Design and manufacture of a custom full-sized rail cart to support a customer’s friction measurement device. The project includes CAD design of CNC-machined mounting components, integration of a water spraying system with valves and sensors, and basic microcontroller programming to control the setup. There is also potential to join the client on-site for testing days.
Solar Power Tracking and Grid Integration Prototype
Power electronics, embedded systems, energy monitoring
Development of a small solar power system that adapts to changing sunlight to maximise energy output. The system will determine the most effective way to use the energy, whether by feeding it into the grid via a commercially available grid-tied inverter, charging a battery or dissipating any excess. A common issue with grid-tied inverters is their inability to operate at lower power levels which this system aims to address.
3D Model Design and Print for Promotional Use
CAD design, 3D printing
Design of 5-6 3D printable models for use in a client’s promotional film. The models will be simple and may be colour-matched using custom filament blends. The project will likely also involve filming the design and printing process to support the clients final video.
Precision Mechanical Calibration System for a Force Sensor Device
CAD design, design for manufacture
Design and manufacture of a mechanical linkage and weight-based system to support accurate calibration of a force sensor on a customer's device. The components designed will likely be CNC machined.
Programmable Temperature Controlled Environmental Chamber
Basic electronics, Arduino / Raspberry Pi
Adaptation of a large industrial walk-in cooling unit with an added heating system to create a low-cost temperature-controlled chamber. The system will use a custom controller to manage temperature within a broad range.
Assembly of Railway Friction Measurement Devices
Hand tool usage
Assembly and basic testing of friction measurement devices for a Sheffield-based startup. This involves working with mechanical components using standard hand tools to prepare units for clients.
